Our Mission

Every Californian depends on affordable transportation. Whether commuting to work, operating a small business, transporting goods, or simply driving to school or the grocery store, the cost of gasoline affects nearly every household and every industry in our state.

For too long, Californians have paid the highest gasoline prices in the nation. While global energy markets influence fuel costs, California drivers also shoulder a growing burden of state taxes, fees, and government mandates that continue to increase the price at the pump.

Californians for Cheaper Gas PAC was created to support state and local leaders who are committed to reversing this trend. We believe government should make life more affordable not more expensive and that hardworking families deserve policies that reduce costs instead of adding to them.

California drivers have consistently paid well above the national average for gasoline. Over the past four years, the gap has remained more than $1.00 per gallon, placing an unnecessary financial burden on families, commuters, and businesses throughout the state.

Meanwhile, California's gasoline excise tax has increased from 53.9¢ per gallon in 2022 to 63.4¢ per gallon in 2026 an increase of nearly 18% in just four years. Because state law automatically adjusts the tax for inflation every July, these increases occur without requiring a new annual vote by the Legislature.

Today, Californians pay:

• 63.4¢ per gallon in state gasoline excise tax

• 18.4¢ per gallon in federal gasoline excise tax

• 2¢ per gallon underground storage tank fee

• 2.25% state gasoline sales tax

• Additional local and district sales taxes

Before percentage-based sales taxes are even applied, fixed state and federal taxes and fees total approximately 83.8 cents per gallon.
